John Edward Dacy

Agency: Kansas City Police Department, MO

Officer John Edward Dacy served in the Marines from January 1957 to November 1959. He began his police training on January 1, 1961, graduated May 1, 1961, and was assigned to Kansas City Police Headquarters. Officer Dacy served in assignments at the Detention Unit and the Twenty-Seventh Street Station and was serving at the Detention Unit at the time of his death. Officer Dacy was with the Kansas City Police Department for 11 years.

Shortly before 1:00 pm on July 21, 1969, three men entered the Jo-Arts Jewelry and Loan Company office at 3933 Main Street. They looked at merchandise for a few minutes before one of the men approached salesman Robert Sokol. The man asked the price of an item and when Sokol left the counter the man drew a revolver. One of the other men also drew a gun on the remaining two employees and took them to a back room where they were tied up. Sokol was taken with the suspects but not bound. One man ransacked the store while the other suspects guarded the employees. When two customers entered the store they were taken to the back room but left unbound. At 1:00 pm, Officer John Dacy, 31, who was off-duty and in plainclothes - entered the store. As he entered the store one of the robbers approached him from behind and warned him not to turn around. Officer Dacy was taken to a second room in the back of the store and, within seconds, six shots were fired. The robbers fled the store and one of the customers called the police. Officer Dacy was shot three times at close range. He was discovered with his service revolver still in his hand, the weapon had been fired twice and one bullet was recovered at the scene. Officer Dacy was transported to Menorah Medical Center where he died at 2:52 pm.

Officer Dacy was survived by his wife, Betty Jo, their daughters, Melaney (age 6) and Melissa (age 2), and a son, Chris (age 5). His brother, Jim Dacy, was accidentally shot and killed in the line of duty in 2001 while serving as chief of the Pierce City Police Department in Missouri.

Reflections:

Uncle John, I was thinking of you today. You have many of your siblings with you in Heaven. Your sister Rita loved you very much. I will always remember you and your wife caring for us while my dad was in Korea and my mom was having my sister Becky. I also remember visiting you and my cousins. Rest in Peace.
