Samuel H. Holmes

Officer Holmes, born on July 24, 1883 in Joplin, Missouri, joined the police department in November 1907, worked the river motorboat patrol for several years, spent one year on the traffic squad, and was a member of the motorcycle squad at the time of the accident. Officer Holmes was survived by his wife, Florence N. (Newton) whom he married on Oct. 25,1905. He was the son of Alexander Holmes, an English immigrant. 

On November 15, 1914 at 9:00 am at 221 W. 15th Street, Officer Holmes, 31, died from complications from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident while on-duty three years prior to his death. His death certificate listed pyaemia-osteo myalitis of the vertebra caused by motorcycle accident as the cause of death.

Services were held on Tuesday, November 17, 1914 at Freeman & Marshall's Funeral Home at 3146 Main.
